: Sudden Engine Failure

I have a 2000 Boxster S with just over 40,500 miles, equipped with manual transmission. Last week I had a reliable mechanic change the oil and the brake fluid. This evening, outside temp 50, engine temp 190, I was going about 40+ mph and shifted from 3rd to 4th. I physically experienced a jump and heard a thump, as if I'd run over something, after which the motor began losing power. I pulled off the road and could move the car at perhaps 10 mph is second gear, but the engine would not rev above 2000 rpm (or less). Shortly after that, I turned off the engine and tried to re-start. It would not restart. For the next 10-15 minures the car was dead as I was trying to get help/advice. I tired to start the engine and it did start. I drove it back to my house (5-6 miles) not pushing it, but did rev up to 4500 with no apparent problems.

Any one have any idea what my problem is?

Thanks loads. I bought the thing at 38,000 and just love driving it and am registered to take it to a DE session with the local PCA club. Now, I'm not sure what to do.

I appreciate any and all advice, input, and/or observations.
