During my first post, I told the background of my 2002 Boxster having sudden engine failure at only 48k mi. With over $13k owed on my financing, I have a tentative price of $6800 for installation of a used 2002 Boxster engine that has approximately 40k mi. Now, $6800 is certainly cheaper than having to purchase another car but when you already experience engine failure at 48k mi, and your car was never raced, missed an oil change, or had suffered any previous mechanical breakdowns, then $6800 becomes a risky proposition.
Has anyone purchased a used motor for their Boxster? If so, what was the result?
Lastly, does anyone know how much a fairly low-mileage 2002 Boxster would be worth to sell it needing a replacement?
Update: I'll find out within the next two weeks if installing a used engine was worth the money as an engine is enroute from California to the East Coast.

I'm curious how it worked out? Also, was $6800 for the engine and installation? Or just the installation? How much did you pay for the engine itself?

The price ended up being $7300 but when the engine arrived from a unnamed online dealer, my mechanic told me that the engine I had purchased for $5k with a supposed 40k miles had roughly double that amount. I then lost another $1300 to pay for freight back to CA and a 20% restocking fee. Talk about getting ripped off. My car still sits in my driveway. I don't know what I'm going to do with it but will make a decision to either sell the car or look for someone much more reputable to purchase an engine. I'd be happy to talk to you via phone if you'd like. My email address is bigalsproshop@comcast.net and leave me your number. It's terribly risky on many accounts.

Thanks, I was mainly just curious, I was browsing thru the older messages and stumbled across yours. I don't have a boxster with a blown engine or anything... at least I hope not, I'm getting a boxter tomorrow.. I made my own thread about it a couple days ago but no replies yet; seems this forum isn't very active!
Anyway good luck with your car.

I recently purchased a Porsche Boxster S. 2004. After six weeks of ownership while the car was idling in the driveway it had a catastrophic engine failure i.e. IMS failure. The car was toned to Toronto at a cost of $600 and after three days the Porsche technicians determined that in fact the car had suffered in irreparable engine failure. I made the diagnosis on the spot in the driveway after I heard the engine explode while idling and had unfortunately read about this problem a few days before on the Internet on just such a site. needless to say I couldn't sell the vehicle as it was worth less I had bought it for $46,000 including taxes. And now I was faced was basically a federal a car or a $20,000 engine replacement bill. Because the car had 40,000 km on it and was five years old Porsche North America did not feel any warranty consideration was indicated. I've since had the car repaired it has a brand-new engine in it and runs flawlessly I'm currently in the drive-in. Right now with 800 km on the new machine. Unfortunately this has left a very bad taste in my mouth and I wonder whether in the future I would ever consider buying the Porsche brand again. I've lusted after this car my entire life and ownership at this point has certainly been incredibly disappointing. I have owned many other vehicles before and have never heard of a Japanese car having an engine failure at 40,000 km. Should be noted I never race the car it was well looked after according to the service records it only ever been serviced twice and no other problems were ever found . It should be noted that I had about three weeks after owning it found in engine oil leak this was due to a main seal leak another problem common to the Boxster engine and this was replaced with a Porsche replacement part without any undue problems. I find it incredible that Porsche North America does not consider this catastrophic engine failure due to an IMS shaft breaking to be a design flaw and feel that this is entirely acceptable for a mechanical device to fail so catastrophically. I have read on other sites than I ms failure can occur in upwards of 27% of Boxster engines.. Surely Porsche North America is aware of this problem it just appears to be a dirty dark secret.
